The game of billiards is thought to have originated from an outdoor game similar to croquet that was played in the 14 century in France. This outdoor game was popular with royalty and common people. It is believed that the game was moved indoors so it could be enjoyed in unfavorable weather. The table top was covered in green to resemble the lawn that game was played on outside.

The first billiard tables are thought to have been made of stone, covered in cloth and to have had a hole in the middle for the ball to go into.

At different times in the past and in different places pool has been forbidden by the church or outlawed and declared illegal.

During the era of Thomas Jefferson, pool was illegal in the state of Virginia but he had a pool table which he hid at his residence.

It was at the end of the 18^th century that world’s first pool hall was built in England. It had only one pool table that had only one pocket.

During the 18^th century, the chalk used by players on cue tips was the same as blackboard chalk. Today cue chalk doesn’t actually contain any chalk. Fine abrasives are used instead.

Billiards was the first sport to have a world championship. It was held in 1873.
